Microneedling Q & A
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a procedure which encourages the skin’s natural collagen and elastin construction. The treatment employs a sterile device which holds 12 micro-needles just in the tip. The device makes minute, micro-injuries in the surface of the skin which stimulates the skin to start healing itself. The treatment can improve wrinkles and fine lines, stretch marks, acne scarring, and injury scars. The micro-channels made in the skin can also be used to incorporate a topical treatment or platelet rich plasma (PRP) which assists the effects penetrate deep into the dermis. PRP, also referred to by patients as the Vampire Facial, is used because it helps with wound healing and can integrate growth factors which speed healing. The PRP is usually obtained from the patient’s own blood by recovering a small sample which is then treated and applied to skin as the microneedling process is completed.
What Does It Feel Like?
The treatment is described to feel similar to sandpaper being swept over the top of the skin. The discomfort experienced should be controllable and topical numbing creams can be used prior to the start of the microneedling process.
Do I Need More Than One Treatment?
Three to six treatments are usually suggested for maximum results. They would be scheduled for every four to six weeks to allow for adequate healing. Acne scarring, stretch marks, more serious wrinkles, and continued photoaging can require up to eight treatments before noticing clearly observed results.
When Will I See Results?
Generally, results can be seen as a glow present right after the treatment is complete. Noticeable improvement of wrinkles and scars takes about two to three weeks and can continue improving for up to six months.
What About Following the Procedure?
At first skin will look pink and flushed, closely approximating a moderate sunburn. Some mild tightness, peeling, or swelling may be noticed as well. This will usually occur for the next 12 hours to 3 days. The healing time needed will vary depending on how complicated the procedure was and the individual person. Some people could heal in a day, while others may require a week or longer.
